Lab Technician/Enologist
Frind Estate Winery is a new winery founded by Markus Frind, the successful tech entrepeneur behind Plentyoffish.com. The distinct nature of this winery is searching for, and achieving, the very best expression of terroir and winemaking style, while remaining true to Varietal. Production is very focused on quality and varietal expression.
For our Lab Technician/Enologist, we are looking for an individual that can be part of our growing team. This position will report directly to the winemaker and assist him in all duties from harvest to finished wines. This is an exciting opportunity for the individual who is looking to grow with a company, contribute to the production team by using their experiences from previous positions, continue to expand their knowledge in winemaking, and proactively look for new ways and methods to better streamline and perform their work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Responsible for quality control on the bottling line and for incoming bottling packaging inspections.
· Manage, plan and execute laboratory analysis to support winemaker cellar and bottling operations
· Responsible for overall day to day operations of winemaking lab and quality control
· Responsible for the integrity and efficiency of the winemaking lab and quality of laboratory work.
· Responsible for ensuring understanding and adherence to the Quality Management system.
· Assist the Winemaker in daily cellar operations
· Maintain high levels of safety and cellar hygiene
· Responsible for ordering, inventory, and maintenance of harvest and cellar supplies
· Prepare Bench Trials
· Participate and design wine improvement trials
· Create and maintain winery document
· Create and maintain annual wine documents including Packaging Profiles and wine analysis charts.
· Set up and participate in both internal winery and external industry wine tastings
· Responsible for creating work orders and monthly compliance reporting in winery including weekly tracking and reporting of winery actions and data input.
· Monthly management of pulling samples for routine analysis and topping
· Harvest grape sampling, crop estimates, flagging vineyard, analysis, and reporting
· During harvest - inoculation and monitoring of fermenting tanks and barrels; including updating brix and temp daily, tasting fermenting lots for soundness, monitoring pump overs and alerting winemaker to any potentially troubled lots.
Requirements:
• Ideal candidate will have a commitment to excellence and high standards, a positive attitude and a desire to be a team player by supporting the Winemaker in all aspects of the job
• Enology / Viticulture degree or similar discipline with 3-5 years prior experience in production of fine wine.
• Commitment to producing high scoring wine from our estate vineyard
• Self-motivated and detail orientated with precision in all work. Accuracy and attention to detail a must.
• Good verbal and written communication skills to effectively manage up and down
• High level of organization skills and ability to proactively manage time.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently
• Strong computer skills in Powerpoint, Microsoft Word, Excel,
• Willing to work increased harvest hours including weekends and early mornings
• Reliable method of transportation
• Other duties as needed
