Job Overview

Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery was established with our first vintage in 1988. At that time we were one of a very few estate wineries dedicated to producing premium quality wines made from 100% Ontario grown grapes. Today, Henry of Pelham is a 200K+ case producer in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. We are looking for a Production Winemaker to join our team. This is an integral role in our company and specific duties would include:

Manage staff: 

·         Provides leadership and direction to the cellar supervisor/cellar team, fostering a positive work environment

·         Effective at delegating, providing feedback, and upholding standards

·         Manage, coordinate, and motivate production workers, which includes hiring, training, and performance appraisals

Oversee production: 

·         Generate work orders for cellar staff, manage the execution of the work orders and support cellar supervisor as necessary

·         Evaluate job completion through active monitoring, resulting in deadlines/production targets being met

·         Ability to problem solve, manage competing priorities, and strong attention to detail

Organize workflow: 

·         Create and implement production schedules, coordinate activities between departments, and organize tasks for staff

Ensure quality and safety: 

·         Work with cellar supervisor to create SOPs for the cellar team

·         Manage and validate SOP execution in conjunction with cellar supervisor, followed by corrective actions if necessary

·         Manage and validate daily checks, maintain quality control standards and enforce company policies/safety procedures to ensure a safe and clean workspace

Problem-solve: 

·         Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during the production process (staffing/equipment) to minimize downtime and maintain productivity

Report and communicate: 

·         Work closely with Head Winemaker and Sr. Production Winemaker to fulfill production targets in the cellar with respect to wine quality and efficiency, reporting feedback in a timely manner

Manage equipment and resources: 

·         Manage inventory cellar goods and assist with ordering/purchasing to maintain appropriate inventory levels

·         Manage the requisition of materials/parts as needed and ensure cellar processing equipment is functioning correctly

Other active duties: 

·         Part of daily tasting, validating quality and health of bulk inventory

·         Approve bottling tanks, validating and adhering to predetermined specifications

Requirements

Key skills and qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in a production winemaking role with previous management experience
  • Leadership: Strong leadership, organizational, and motivational skills
  • Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  •  Technical: Knowledge of manufacturing machinery and equipment, computer skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Education: Degree/Diploma in Winemaking/Oenology or similar field

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to work extended hours when required, particularly during the annual harvest and Icewine harvest periods which will include evenings/nights/weekends
  • Able to lift 25kg and able to work at heights

Compensation

Expected salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000 per year

3 to 4 weeks of Paid Vacation per year
