Job Overview

Winemaking Cellar Assistant Position at Wending Home Winery,

General Description of Duties:

This is a position for a Skilled and Technical Winemaking role expected to perform a variety of work assignments including:

-        racking,

-        pumping,

-        blending

-        filtering,

- barrel work

- sensory assessment and spotting issues

- lab work

-        crush pad:

destemming/crushing/pumping

pressing

weighing

Requirements

All of the above work may include :

-        Set up of equipment in proper arrangement and with appropriate settings and adjustments

-        Calculation of volumes and additions in various measurement formats (mg/L, g/hL., Grams/Tonne, etc)

-        Work of a physical nature, requiring lifting, carrying, dragging and climbing.

-        Use of ladders, lift truck, pallet-jack.

Specific Duties:

-        Cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning (followed by sanitizing, sterilizing, and general removal of and aversion to dirt, grime, and slime).

-        Making chemical additions to juice and wine.

-        Safe operation of a forklift to move and stack barrels.

-        Filling, topping, and racking out of barrels.

-        Obtaining lab samples, doing conventional lab analysis, TA, pH, SO2, alcohol and FOSS work.

-        Fining and filtering juice and wine with the equipment at hand in the winery.

-        Assist in equipment maintenance.

-        Following and observing all safe cellar practices.

-        Probably many other duties as determined by the winemaker. Stay tuned.

Employment Status:

Permanent full-time, year-round, with extra hours required at harvest (Sept to November) while there is an ability to work fewer hours during slower Winter, Spring seasons (if desired).

Must have ability to communicate effectively with good skills in reading, writing, computer software (such as excel, word, and possibly others).  Basic math skills. Must be able to work safely around equipment, electrical outlets and chemicals. Individuals selected for this position must be reliable and possess a good work ethic. Must be able to repeatedly lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Expectations Career Goals:

The successful candidate will be working directly with a veteran winemaker and there will be high importance placed on learning and implementing practices aligned with super-premium winemaking. The goal will be to take over a full head winemaking role within 2 years. Therefore a strong commitment to learning and then gaining independent control over the work processes.

Compensation

$22.00/hour up to $25.00/hour to start - depending on education, experience, demonstrated skills, work efficiency and priority designations.
